Every human being suffers from Dental problems at one time or the other in life. You might not like it, but you cannot escape from going to a Dentist when in times of need and pain.Dental treatment costs are pretty high. Not many people do have a Dental insurance cover. Despite all these, people still tend to neglect oral hygiene. Not many are actually not aware of how to maintain dental and oral hygiene. Our daily habits can be improved to a large extent by giving a little more attention to details.

Most parents believe that brushing twice daily is good enough. You might not be aware of the fact that plaque develops in between the teeth even with brushing twice daily. When it comes to gargling after consuming food, not many people follow this habit. Nobody has told you that the leftover food in your mouth causes bacteria to form in the mouth. Not many people bother to use mouth wash too. If you were to ask people about Dental flossing, chances are likely that they will not be aware because they are ignorant about dental health concepts. They might turn around and ask you what Dental flossing is all about. If you think that the ignorance is more with the lower income groups, you are mistaken. You will be surprised to know that even the middle income groups too are not aware of such issues. Therefore combined with cost factor the awareness of good oral hygiene too is responsible for poor dental health among communities.

One way to improve your oral hygiene is to give detailed attention to your day to day habits. Start with checking out the contents of the tooth paste that you are using. Read through the contents as given on the tube to identify the fluoride content in the paste. Fluorides help fight tooth decay and keep the bacteria away and does not allow plaque formation too.

Have you had a look at the toothbrush you are using daily. You should always buy only branded toothbrushes from well known companies which are approved.Ensure that you buy medium soft brush and not hard bristles brush which will damage your teeth and gums. Before buying ensure that the brush is of the profile which is easy to hold and you are able to get a grip while brushing. Most important thing that you should always remember is to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Do not use a toothbrush beyond this period, for the bristles would have worn out and brushing will not be effective.

What about the maintenance of the tooth brush; have you looked at it yet?. Washing your tooth brush before and after use is very important and use warm water wherever available to clean the brush.Ensure that the water and debris are removed from the brush and place it in a holder or keep them in upright position so that no water is retained in the brush.

It is not a good idea to store the toothbrush inside a closed container for the moisture content inside makes the brush a good place for bacteria to grow and multiply. By keeping the tooth brush out in the open, you are allowing it to dry properly and remain clean.

More importantly never share your toothbrush with another individual and not even your family members.Remember bacteria and virus can spread through saliva and through the tooth brush. Some of the deadly viruses like Hepatitis B and C do spread through the body fluid and gets lodged in the tooth brush too which then gets transferred to you when you use the brush.

Paying attention to such simple habits and building up your awareness helps improve your oral hygiene and keep the Dentist away.
